The Lower Bann, a canalised river, is navigable from Lough Neagh to the sea at the Barmouth between Castlerock and Portstewart Strand. With a fall of 12.5 metres along its 60 km length there are just five locks, one a double lock, leaving long stretches of open water. The Lower Bann is very popular with watersports enthusiasts, anglers and cruisers alike with a zoning system in place to accommodate varied interest. Access from the sea by both cruiser and sailing vessels is also encouraged and the rural stretches of water have no commercial traffic, making it a truly peaceful waterway. Privately owned boats navigate the 60 km into Lough Neagh where a myriad of additional recreational opportunities await. Alternatively some may head to the sea to visit the outstanding attractions such as the spectacular Giant’s Causeway, and the coastal towns and villages along the North Coast of the island of Ireland.
